In 1847, a company of gunners and sailors in Batavia, Illinois began to make swivels for handguns. At first they made them from wood but soon found that the metal was harder and more durable than wood. The company went through several name changes before it became known as Western Armory. The first production guns were actually designed by George Weisberger and produced by his company. During World War II, the armory produced rifles and pistols for the United States military. It also manufactured munitions including bombs, rockets, torpedoes, and artillery shells. After the war ended, Western Armory continued to produce firearms until it ceased operations in 1984. In 2013-2014, the armory was donated to local history museum called Illinois History Museum which operates it as a historical exhibit.

Batavia is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first human habitation in Batavia was by the O'Donnells in 1820. They were followed by the Gentrys in 1827 and then the Smiths in 1841. In 1852, J. Edgar Thomson erected a log cabin on what is now West Main Street. In 1865, John Hargrave opened his general store here which became a large and influential business until it closed its doors in 1984. The post office here was established on November 7, 1861, with Wm Silliman as the first mail carrier. A gristmill operated here from 1863 to 1865 and again from 1886 to 1898; it had been built by John Hargrave's father-in-law Elijah Burriss for Burriss and his son George Hargrave Jr.. A sawmill operated here from 1888 to 1914; it also had been built by John Hargrave's father-in-law Elijah Burriss for Burriss and his son George Hargrave Jr.. A cotton gin was built about 1900 but failed to take off due to competition from other mills; it has since been demolished In 1916, Batavia organized as a village under Section 10 of the Township Act of 1909. At that time its population was 1,564 people and its plat included land bounded on the north by State Highway 46 (now I-88), on the east by State Route 3 (now Kedzie Avenue), and on the south by White Road (now Batavia Drive). On January 1st 1920 Village Services Incorporated made changes to their organizational plan which included annexing parts of unincorporated Kane County including portions of Batavia Township including Northwest Side Road located between White Road/Batavia Drive and South Boulevard/State Highway 146 (itself located between White Road/Bataviadriveand Kedzie Avenue). In 1924 village trustees adopted an official name change which was announced at a meeting held at Plainfield High School – "Batavia Township" becoming "Kane County" effective February 15th 1925 with all futurevillage publications using this name until discontinued circa 1990 when township status reverted back to that of Batavia Township

As a result of this event, Batavia lost its status as a town and became an unincorporated community within the county seat of Decatur.
