Fenton and his family who founded the town on August 26, 1853. The Captain had arived from New York with his family and settled down in what is now Batavia. The first guns that were manufactured in Batavia were shotguns and muskets. Shotguns were made of wood and could only fire one shot at a time. Muskets were made of metal and could fire more than one shot at a time. Firearms Manufacturing Company was founded by Captain Fenton with help from his son-in-law Sam Hagerty on October 3, 1853. The company produced firearms for local use as well as SOLDIER rifles for military engagements around the United States during the 1850s and 1860s.
