Batavia, Illinois is a small town located in the far northwest corner of the United States. It is bordered by Sangamon County to the east and west, and Rock County to the north. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. Batavia was laid out in 1829 by George Stonington and named for his birthplace, Batavia, on the Illiniwek River. The first settler in Batavia was A. J. Skinner. He arrived in 1834 from Kentucky and built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. Skinner's cabin became known as "Skinner's Fort." In 1835 John Dearborn came to Batavia from Indiana and built a log cabin on what is now Park Avenue. Dearborn became one of the earliest farmers in Batavia. From 1836-1839 there were several visits by Ulysses S Grant, then secretary of war under President James K Polk, to check out conditions in IllinoisTerritories newly acquired from Mexico during that time period including Champaign-Urbana area which later became Springfield In 1840 Josephine Baker married Alfred Marshall who had come overland from Nauvoo via California Rapids Expedition with his brother Huntington Curtis Marshall donated land for a schoolhouse which was built on what is now State Street between First Avenue (now Elm) and Second Avenue (now Washington). The first students were students at Loyola Academy School before it moved to its present location on State Street near Third Avenue around 1870 In 1849 Daniel Webster served as United States Senator from Massachusetts during part of his campaign against Zachary Taylor Webster also served as Mayor of Albany, New York from 1850-1851 Nathaniel Lyon came overland with his family from Quincy, Massachusetts aboard USS Constitution anchored off Green Island on May 17th 1840 while naturalized American citizens were being accepted into Illinois Territory Batesville native Solomon Northrup opened a store called The Northrup Store at 62009 Southeast Jefferson Boulevard where he remains today as an owner/operator

The first European settlers in what is now Batavia were French traders who established a fur trading post on the Chicago River in 1779. The name "Batavia" derives from a Sauk word meaning "the place where we hunt." In 1837, the government of Daniel Boone selected Batavia as site for the new Illinois Territory. By 1840, over 60% of all growth in Batavia was due to agriculture; this changed with the arrival of railroad workers and their families during World War I. After repeal of Prohibition in 1920, business boomed thanks to its reopened bars and nightlife Today, Batavia remains an economically vibrant community with two hospitals and numerous startups and small businesses based there. Additionally, it has become known for its annual Taste Of Chicago event which features more than 100 restaurants from around Chicagoland
