In the early 1800s, Batavia was a small town in Illinois. It was home to a gunsmith and rifle manufacturer named John Brodie. He operated his business out of his house on Elm Street. On November 5th of that year William Hays formed the nucleus of what would become Union Army's First Corps under General John Brown and invaded Illinois from Indiana Territory while still occupying Normal; however they were repelled at White Sands Prairie and never reachedbatavia before withdrawing due to bad weather on November 16th near Cairo also known as Black Hawk Ridge which is now called “Halls Hill” located about 2 miles east southeast of batavia off State Route 11 north (SR 11 parallels US-35). Aftermath: Battle Of Halls Hill - A bloody engagement fought between Unionsoldiers from First Corps led by GeneralJohn Brown and an Indianapolis militia force commanded by Colonel Abram Young resultedin 10 dead & 30 wounded on November 16TH just south or HallsHill Rd., east/southeastofbatavia off SR 11 north (SR 11 parallels US-35).
