This law required all owners of handguns to present a license to carry them on their person at all times. A few years later, Batavia banned the carrying of any type of weapon by non- citizens without a permit. The townspeople soon realized they needed more protection from the elements and began manufacturing their own firearms. By 1868, all handguns had been outlawed and assault weapons had become popular among Batavia citizens. In 1893, BATF regulations changed again and now all handgun ownership was limited to those who could display a valid license from local police department. However, some people continued to stockpile firearms even after these restrictions went into effect. By 1911, BATF regulations once again allowed unrestricted handgun ownership by anyone over 21 years old with an appropriate firearm licence from their state police department or sheriff’s office (the exception being those who acted as personal security guards). However, this new rule did not apply toassault weapons which still remained illegal in Illinois until 1978. By 1934, most of the guns Manufactured inBatavia were retired or no longer produced due to falling demand for ammunition and other reasons. The community was named after Batavia, Illinois, which was then part of the Indiana Territory and had a population of about 150 people when it was founded in 1837 by Major John Latham and his family. The Latham family also founded Decatur on the same location in 1839. It is said that early settlers were primarily farmers who grew corn and beans. After American independence came along, some decided to move to what would become Batavia because of its good soil and climate. In 1847, a post office was established here; however, it did not remain open long due to difficulties with postal service. In 1850, the first school was built; however, it did not stay open very long because it struggled to keep up with the needs of students from other communities nearby. In 1868-69, a new courthouse was built; however, this structure also failed to last very long because too many people wanted to use it for their own businesses instead of using it as an official government building. In 1870-71 cash crops were started here for the first time in what would be an important role for Batavia in later years as growth began elsewhere in Illinois due to railroad development and agricultural advances brought about by improved farming methods brought over from England and Europe during that time period. One significant event that took place during this time period occurred when Abraham Lincoln became president on November 6th 1865 while living in Springfield IL; he made a speech at batavia High School just before leaving town for Springfield where he would serve as governor from 1865 until his assassination on April 15th 1876 six days after taking office making him one of only four Ulysses S Grant Presidents (the others being James Kentsfield (1872-77)), all Ulysses S Grant’s term presidents were elected while living outside of Washington D C which greatly increased demand for goods coming into Illinois thanks largely to Stephen A Kirkland’s efforts as Secretary Of War under President Johnson providing much needed patronage opportunities across state lines especially given Lincoln’s unpopularity within most sections of the country following his Emancipation Proclamation which effectively ended slavery throughout most or all states east of Missouri). Industry began developing around here during this time period with lumber becoming increasingly popular due both to its low cost per unit compared to other manufacturing industries and how well-maintained these forests were allowing sawmills/logging operations located close by not having any competition whatsoever once production moved out there onto more marketable land further away from populated areas thereby freeing up more acreage near urban centers where housing developments now exist today including what used once been known as “Batavia Township” nestled amongst residential neighborhoodsstill containing numerous pioneer farmsteads scattered throughout every block still featuring half century old barns/houses/greenspaces right up until present day giving rise various nicknames such as “The Old Town” “Old World Village” etc). Railroad Development quickly followed bringing new jobs (largely related to construction) t o townspeople although freight trains continued Passing through town continuing passenger service until 1971 when Amtrak discontinued steam powered passenger trains based outta Chicago making way for diesel locomotives which continue services presently even though Amtrak operation has caused some destruction /damage over recent years particularly affecting two local churches situated directly across busy Main Street from where I sit currently writing these lines inside what used formerly served as Church #1 now houses several large apartments resulting & incidentally causing considerable traffic congestion outside which again has resulted & continuesto cause considerable inconvenience (& impact) on qualityof life index essentially ruining many families lives (& creating serious social & environmental problems) essentially wrecking trust between citizens & government entities typical situations such as this are why I am passionate about preserving my community traditionally called simply “The Place Where I Live”).
