Batavia is a village in Champaign County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Urbana-Champaign Metropolitan Area. The first European to visit what is now Batavia was Captain James Cook on his third voyage around the world in 1770. Cook named it "Ayer" after Ayer Basset, one of his crewmen. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne and 9 other soldiers under Colonel John Gregg built a fort here while besieging Fort Dearborn in Michigan Territory. On July 8, 1814, the American flag flew from one of the fort's battlements for the first time in history. Batavia was founded by Nathaniel Merrill in 1830 as a trading post on the main stem of the Kankakee River. Merrill named it for his father-in-law, Ebenezer Dodge (1769–1852), who had been an officer with George Rogers Clark's army during the War of 1812 and had served as judge at Galesburg before moving to Illinois in 1819 to become a land speculator and early settler there. In 1830, Dodge also purchased 3 acres (1 km2) north of town along Kankakee Creek from Levin & Peck Novera for $100 cash plus 10 acres (4 ha) worth of timber rights that he would later sell for $750 per acre ($/ha). The site where Batavia now stands was once home to several small villages: Pecatonica (known as Whitefish), Swansea Landing (later renamed Dryden), and Fonda Springs (). Nathaniel Merrill died in 1830 without leaving any children; however his widow continued to live here until her death two years later. For many years she raised chickens and pigs on her portion of land until they were finally moved out because wild hogs were terrorizing their neighbors' property near Greenock Lake.. In 1840 Gideon Welles bought about 4 acres (1 km2) northeast of town for $200 cash plus 20 acres (8 ha) worth of timber rights that he would eventually sell for $800 per acre ($/ha). He named it Welles Heights after Gideon Welles Sr., who had been born near Fairfield Junction in Massachusetts but immigrated to Indiana when he was just over 21 years old and settled down there with some family members when news arrived through letters patent from President James K. Polk that Ohio had statehood on March 6th, 1800 - thus giving Indiana its own government separate from Pennsylvania! The grant allowed Welles all sorts of privileges not granted by Congress including voting rights within Indiana limits and access to Indian trade routes between Upper Canada and California! Although this grant did nothing to help him financially since he could only trade goods back into Pennsylvania rather than sell anything outside those bounds - it added much prestige following his purchase which helped solidify his place among early Indianapolis entrepreneurs Laurence Hutton Jr., Elijah Hitchman etc.). Although some people still refer to Welles Heights today as "Welles Manor", this name may be misleading as well because although partaking fully into local governance such as electing trustees or having a school board - wellesley Farms does not situate itself anywhere close whatsoever within eitherbataviaVillage or Wellesley Hills Cemetery...In reality what lies todaybetween Clinton Road eastward past Old Main Street towards Lebanon Roadand westward along Lebanon Roadto Highway 41 should more properly be called "Wellesley Heights." In 1907-1908,batavia hosted a major exhibition called "Illinois Collectors' Exhibition," which featured many famous Illinois artists including James McNeill Whistler and Edward Hopper. After years of decline as a result of heavy industry development within its borders (including an unsuccessful attempt byBatavia Municipal Utility District to buy land adjacent tothe village for use as open space),the community began to rebound after becoming home to several businesses such as Sievers's Craft Shop and Blueberries Pizza Place during2010-2013avid growth period
