Bartlett, Illinois is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 598 at the 2010 census. The community was named after Colonel George Bartlett, an early settler. The first white person to live in Bartlett were two men who traveled from Michigan on horseback in 1837. They named their new settlement "Anoka" after Anoka County, Minnesota. A post office was established in Bartlett in 1839 and remained open until it closed in 1904. In 1865, John Crouse built a cabin near the modern day intersection of US-6 and IL-19 called "Crouse's Cabin". It served as a stopping point for travelers on their way to points north. In the late 1800s and early 1900s there were several lumber mills around Bartlett including the Mount Rushmore Lumber Company (now part of First Data) which operated from 1905 until 1915; Wabash Paper Mills which operated from 1910 until 1914; and Northern Pacific Railroad's Chicago Terminal Railroad which opened in 1916). The last mill closed down in 1925. From 1925 until 2006 there was only one grocery store located downtown - Grocery Outlet - that became known as "The Old Mill Store". In 2006 the business moved to an adjacent building and continues to serve customers today. 1st Data acquired control of the old mill store from Grocery Outlet LLC during its bankruptcy reorganization process on November 10th 2016.. Since then 1st Data has been restoring/maintaining all aspects of what once constituted 'The Old Mill Store'. This included but is not limited to: groceries, flowers & plants, used books/magazines/DVDs etc...
