Bartlett is a small town in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Bartlett were French traders in 1763 and they named it "Bâtiment de la Pointe" (Building of the Point). In 1819, John PemberTON bought and donated land to the town on which he built a sawmill. In 1842, Isaac Newton became the first postmaster in Bartlett. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all residents of Illinois to leave their homes for six weeks and march into Springfield to deliver munitions. A select few chose to stay behind and form a community called "Bartlett". The town's first school was established in 1865 and its first mayor was John Fenton McCormick. In 1880, solid rock foundations were laid for what would become home of Illinois Central Railroad's main line yards; these remain today as one of Bartlett's most popular attractions along Elm Street near Main Street. On July 4th 1902 citizens voted unanimously to change their name from "Bartlett" to "Chicago", effective November 1st 1902 when state law took effect changing all names within 100 miles of Chicago be changed on an annual basis by referendum. During World War II many local businesses made contributions towards making sure that food wasn't misshapen or spoilage due to lack of storage space available; some individuals still have items from this time period including machines used in produce packing plants such as those manufactured by Kaiser-Permanente Corporation (now Albertsons) at 4775 South Wabash Avenue in Lombard Park - now part of Sears Holdings Incorporated headquarters building located inside then Sears Center Corporate Campus across Michigan Avenue from Millennium Park).
