Bartlett, who operated the business from their home on State Street in downtown Bartlett. In 1916, the brothers sold their business to the American Tobacco Company for $3 million. American Tobacco continued to operate the business until it merged with RJR Nabisco in 1984.
Bartlett is a small town in the Illinois River Valley, about 25 miles east of Carbondale. The population was 1,253 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Quad Cities geographical area. The first settlers in the area were farmers and their families who arrived from Vermont in 1814. They built a log cabin on what is now State Street, which they named for John Bartlett, one of their leaders. In 1835, William Davenport and his family settled here and founded Davenport & Bartlett Insurance Company. In 1856, Samuel Grote moved to Bartlett and established Wm. Grote & Sons ice cream parlor. A post office called Bartlett was established in 1865, but it was discontinued in 1870 because of lack of residents. In 1875, Jethro Cope opened a general store here that became known as Cope's stores until it closed in 1965. After World War II, many businesses came to Bartlett including rubber companies such as Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company (1948), Allis-Chalmers Manufacturing Company (1957), International Harvester Co., Incorporated (1968), Honeywell Electric Engineering Corporation (1970) and Eldon Chemical Corporation (1979). The production side of the economy has been important throughout its history with manufacturing accounting for about 60% of job output today according to government data from 2009-10; however service businesses have become increasingly important as well with transportation services making up 27% of employment while restaurants make up 21%.
