Bartlett is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bartlett was founded by John Bartlett in 1827. He homesteaded land on the east side of the Potomac River and built a log cabin. In 1830 he married Anna Applewhite and they started a family. They were farmers until 1847, when Bartlett moved to what is now Springfield and began cattle farming. He became president of the National Cotton Council in 1868 and served until his death in 1880. His son John Bartlett Jr., who also became president of the council, succeeded him. The town name comes from John Bartlett's house on Willoughby Road (now West Main Street). The first settler called it "Bartleystown" but later changed it to "Bartletown". In 1929 local officials renamed it "John Fenton Bartlett" in honor of John Fenton who had been instrumental in developing Springfield as an agricultural center. The first school opened in Bartletown Township on December 15, 1838; it was housed in a building that still stands there today (the old Elementary School). A second school opened on May 9, 1840; this one was located on Broadway near where Interstate 65 crosses over from Illinois into Missouri today (the old High School). On November 3rd, 1850 residents voted to change their townsite name to "Springfield" after President Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his address from Ford’s Theatre here that day! Today about 60% of Springfield’s population resides within its limits – making it one of America’s most diverse cities! In addition to schools which operated continuously through grade 12th-14th grades until 1955 (including three high schools which closed during that time), there were two community colleges which provided educational opportunities for students up to college level: Northwest Illinois College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) both located adjacent to downtown Springfield throughout those years; both institutions have since closed down but their programs are still available online atwww.niucarbondale.edu/.
