Bartlett is a small village in Pike County, Illinois, United States. The population was 773 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Bartlett was platted in 1876 by Elisha Chambers and Jeremiah Ladd as part of the town of Zion. The name "Bartlett" was given to the community by General James Wabash during his expedition into central Illinois in 1811. The first settler in Bartlett was John Hargrave who arrived about 1875. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Hargrave's Store. In 1888, Jno Pritchard moved from Kentucky to purchase land near present-day Bartlett and began building a house which he called "Pritchard's Cabin". In 1893, Pritchard donated land for a school which became known as Old School Hall Academy. In 1905, Rev. Averill Compton founded Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church with land he purchased near present-day Main Street and East Prairie Avenue. When that church disbanded in 1961 due to financial difficulties, it left all its property including many buildings behind when it moved to new headquarters on State Parkway south in Carbondale; however, some old structures remain still standing such as Father Compton's Chapel located on North Prairie Avenue (now northbound I-94). In 1916, Daniel Newmark set up an grocery store at 222 NMain St., which he continued until his death in 1984 at age 93 years old after running it for more than 60 years (). His grandson later operated the store until his death in 2006 (). Bartlett, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Bartlett was first settled in 1837 by John and Eliza Bartlett. In 1851 it became the seat of McLean County. The county was created from parts of Cook and Kane Counties on November 3, 1852. On December 4, 1861, the name of the village changed to Bartlett after Wm. Hance Bartlett who had been elected as a delegate to Congress from that county in 1860 and 1862. In 1870s when railroads were being built through Illinois they bypassed small towns such as Bartlett because they were not yet large enough to be served by train headlights shining down on them fromChicago's downtown districts (the "Big Four"). So when Northern Pacific Railroad extended their line south out of Chicago into McLean County in the early 1800s via what is now Joliet Township - then part of Cook County (now DuPage) - farmers near Bartlett realized that if they could get a railroad stop close to their homes they could sell their goods more cheaply and make money shipping goods all the way back to Chicago without having to worry about delivery times or getting lost in countryside National Road country (today's I-80). This business model continued until Northern Pacific discontinued service between Joliet and Chicago in 1942 due to World War II rationing; however most transportation within Cook County still took place through these smaller towns until recently when expressways have replaced trains as our primary form of travel outside city limits
