Bartlett is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,492 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from the nearby Bartlettsville Pike and its namesake Benjamin Bartlett, Congressman from 1847 to 1861. The first settlement in what is now Bartlett was made on April 12, 1837 by David Krieger and his family when they arrived on horseback from Missouri. They named their new town after Benjamin Bartlett, who had been elected as a congressman from Illinois in 1847. At the time of their arrival there were only a few hundred people living in this area. By 1840 the town had grown to encompass 6 stores and 25 homes. In 1846 John Dooley built a log cabin near where he still lives today as the first post office in Bartlett. The early residents of Bartlett were mainly farmers and their families did most of the farming themselves because there was no real market for their products outside of Illinois at that time. As time passed though many businesses began to open up in town including a mill which started operation in 1850 and an sawmill which opened up in 1853. In 1860 Samuel Morse founded the first telephone line between Chicago and Springfield using his own equipment! Thanks to these various businesses and accomplishments over the years Barthlettsville has become known as one of those towns with something going for it whether it be good schools or great shopping options! There are also several festivals throughout year like Harvestfest (a fall celebration), Old Timer's Days (a summer celebration),Christmas markets etc., all designed to bring people together for some fun!
Bartlett was founded in 1829 by John Bartlett, a farmer. The town grew gradually during the early years, but it reached its peak around 1850 when over 30 families lived in the small town. The population dropped rapidly in the later years of the 1800s, due to economic reasons and warfare. However, Bartlett did not go extinct as a village until 1955.
