In 1899 it became a city under the name of Bartlett, Illinois; however it reverted to its original name in 1907. Bartlett has been home to several colleges and universities including Northwestern University, DePauw University, and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIU Carbondale). The city also has two hospitals- one belonging to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the other to Mercy General Hospital- both with extensive medical services. In 2000 Bartlett had a population of 10,871 people making it the smallest town in Cook County by population.
Bartlett is a city in Macomb County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Bartlett was John Addison Bartlett, who arrived in 1827. In 1830, he married Lydia (Lydia) Smith and they started a small farm on the east side of town. In 1834 they moved to what is now the western edge of town and began raising corn and beans on their farmstead which became known as "Addison's Prairie." They also raised chickens and pigs. In 1840, Bartlett bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land along the Sangamon River for $4 per acre from Nicholas Davenport. This property included all that stands today within the limits of Bartlett City limits except for a few blocks on the south side which remain clustered around what is now Union Station Road; this land was eventually annexed by Chicago after Davenport died in 1849). After years of hard work, bartlett finally received title to his 640 acres from Nicholas Davenport in 1854. He built a house thereon and named it "Bartlettsville". He continued to reside there until his death in 1861. He had three children: one son George W., one daughter Sarah J., and one daughter-in-law Anna Cushman Bartlett (1835-1903). After George W.'s death in 1865, Sarah J.'s husband David Sometime took up residence there with her until he too passed away in 1889. Mrs. Sometime's daughter Alice Aiken later remained here until her death in 1957; she bequeathed her home to the city as part of its Community Services Department following her donation ().
