Bartlett, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bartlett was founded in 1836 by Elijah Bartlett and his brother John Bartlett. It was named for Joshua Bartlett, an early settler in this area. The first post office opened in 1840. In 1851, John Bartlett donated of land to the town for a schoolhouse and square. In 1865, Elijah Bartlett donated of land to the town for a church and cemetery. The first school building was built in 1870; it served as an elementary school until 1954 when it became a high school. In 1955, the original church building replaced by a new one served as the town's only courthouse until 1978 when it burned down and had to be rebuilt. In 1862-1864 there were three skirmishes with Confederate troops near present-day Bartlett; these skirmishes are not included on historical maps or records because they do not involve local residents but rather Union troops from neighboring towns that were also fighting against Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War (see Battle of Springfield). The community experienced significant growth after being incorporated as a village in 1922 under then-Mayor Averill Garland Huntley III (). Growth continued through annexation intoMcLean County (and eventually into other counties) during ensuing decades due largely to water needs following World War II: Barthleton Township received its own river supply after construction began on what would become known as "the Hartzell Dam". This increased agricultural production across much of central Illinois which led to more jobs available close to home while providing cheap labor for farmers who could no longer find enough skilled workers elsewhereabouts; something that continues today with suburban development happening right next door without any appreciable increase in job opportunities within commuting distance despite continuing economic stability throughout most of Central Illinois over recent decades notwithstanding some minor bumps along the way like increasing competition from outer suburbs (eek!), etc...!?!?
