Goodspeed later donated it to the public domain for use as an agricultural school (). In 1861, Harry Godfrey founded Godfrey & Company here with four employees (). His store became one of the largest businesses in town before he died in 1886. The business continued into good times through World War I until 1918 when it went out of business due to prohibitionism (). After Prohibition ended, the store reopened under new ownership but closed again shortly thereafter due to economic difficulties (). The first post office was established here on October 12th, 1866 (). It continued into operation until 1893(). On November 8th(), 1890 (), local residents organized themselves into a village called “Bartlett” under charter from McHenry County commissioners (). The village lasted only briefly before being discontinued because there were not enough people living there () On May 6th(), 1893 (), another charter organization called “Higgins” was formed with similar goals but changed its name back to Bartlett after its founders bought some additional property nearby ( ). Bartlett is named after John Bartlett, an early settler and member of the Illinois General Assembly. The first post office in Bartlett was established on December 12, 1837. The town site was surveyed by George Stephenson and named for him on February 10, 1846. The village of Bartlett was organized on April 9, 1850 by a group of nine farmers from neighboring towns who had purchased land from Stephenson for $10 per acre. The village had two stores and one blacksmith shop when it incorporated as a Village on October 14, 1850. A school was built in 1851 and additions were made to it until it became an all-boys grammar school in 1902. Named for Revs John Wesleyan Methodist Episcopal Church (now called Trinity Lutheran) located south of town along the tracks between Chicago and Quincy IL., this large Gothic Revival style church still stands today serving as both a community center and worship space for many people over the years
