Bartlett was a small town in Clark County, Illinois, United States from 1879 to 1951. The population was 1,702 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Bartlett was John Bartlett, who arrived on July 4, 1829. He and his family were the only white people living in what is now Clark County when it formed from land donated by James Kapp and others. The town site was chosen because of its strategic location: it lay just north of the Chisholm Trail and east of the Mississippi River. In 1879, Bartlett became a village after approval by the Illinois General Assembly. The population increased rapidly during the late 1800s due to immigrants coming to work in agriculture or becoming farmers themselves; there were over 100 residents by 1915. In 1921, growth slowed as World War I ended and new waves of immigrants began arriving; however, this did not last long as many farms closed during the Great Depression which affected Bartlett hard. By 1940 there were only 9 residents left in Bartlett Village and 2 remaining families lived off-grid until 1995 when an Off Grid Villages Trust purchased all but one home for use as a holiday cottage park with 10 bedrooms/9 bathrooms
