Bartlett is a small town in central Illinois. The population was 1,272 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Peoria–Moline, IL Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Bartlett was Elisha Sheerer in 1812. His family moved to Bartlett from Marlboro, New Jersey in 1813. The town was founded on December 12, 1824 by Reverend George Wirt and Dr. Samuel Morse as a Methodist church community known as "New Jerusalem." In 1828, John Quincy Adams became the first U.S. president to visit Bartlett while he was campaigning for re-election against Andrew Jackson. In 1830, Bartholomew Gossett settled down in what is now Bartlett and began trading fur goods with the natives of Illinois's Great Lakes region. He also built a sawmill which still stands today on the banks of the Kankakee River northwest of town center (now part of Carbondale). In 1865, General James Murtaugh occupied what is now Bartlett during his efforts to break through Union lines at Springfield Armory during the American Civil War. General Murtaugh's forces burned all but one house within three miles of his encampment before withdrawing back into Illinois under cover of darkness. A post office called "Ellington" was established in Bartlett on January 7, 1827 by Joshua Hinton; it served until February 15, 1861 when it merged with "New Jerusalem". On November 4th 1865 local residents raised $5 from gathered cornmeal mush at a public meeting to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) southeast of present day Bartlettsville along Kankakee Creek near modern Carbondale for $10 per acre ($100 total). The land purchase marked an important milestone in the development and expansion of nearby Carbondale due to its lack of available agricultural land south of Chicago at that time

Bartlett is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Bartlett was Lorenzo Bartlett, who arrived in 1837. He and his family were the nucleus of what would become the most influential family in Bartlett until after World War II when they Cavett brothers took over land holdings and renamed themselves The Bartletts. In 1868, Wm Hoadly bought 202 acres (87 hectares) east of Bartlett from Lorenzo Bartlett for $1,000 cash. Harry Sprague purchased an additional 281 acres (120 hectares) east of Bartlett from Wm Hoadly for $2,000 on January 2nd 1870. These initial purchases created the townsite that now lies north of downtown Chicago within Kane County boundaries - making it one of only two townships in Cook County to be formed fromnahant purchase by its citizens rather than being taken by force from another township or village. Pioneering entrepreneurs John Prentice and James Fenton opened a general store and post office in 1865; both men are buried there along with their spouses Rebecca Surtees and Betsey Burriss Prentice In 1875 they organized a local bank which became First National Bank & Trust Company; it remains one of the city's largest banks to this day Fenton also founded Watterson Manufacturing Company located on nearby owned land later becoming Northwestern Bell Telephone Company Quality Control Engineer George Aiken established Aiken-Litton Paper company (later American Paper Supply Co.) on obsolete logs near present day State Street just south of town limits on December 15th 1888 which became America Paper Products Incorporated today as Hantzell paper products division The first school was built as a log cabin soon after arrival into town by Dr. William Swayne Sr., who taught classes for three years before moving to new brick building later named Prairie View School District #4A at 6305 NNW Highway 95
