Bartlett is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Bartlett was founded in 1836 by John D. Bartlett and his family as a result of his donation of land to the village for $1 per acre. The first post office opened in Bartlett on October 14, 1837. In 1851, General Sam Jones discovered coal deposits near Bartlett and organized the Illinois Coal Company to extract coal from the mines around Bartlett. The company operated until 1862 when it merged with two other companies to form the Illinois Mining and Manufacturing Company which continued operations until 1898. In 1860, George Wickersham built a sawmill on South Union Street in Bartlett which became one of the largest mills in Sangamon County. In 1865, Wickersham donated land to build a school that would serve both villages together; today's schoolhouse is located on South Union Street within the boundaries ofbartlet Village Hall (formerly called "Bartlet School"). In 1870, Julius Caesar Chubb renamed Barthleton Township Barthleton Heights after his father-in-law Rev James Larkin who had been elected as Mayor of Quincy, Massachusetts during an election year in which many townships were reorganized due to changes in state law caused by the American Civil War (the original chartered townships did not have mayors). Rev James Larkin also donated land for a library which opened on December 10th 1870 under charter from Milwaukee County; it was moved from its original location on North Second Street within bartlet Village Hall before being moved into its present building on East Third Street just south of current day Elmhurst Road (now Dearborn Avenue). In 1888 another gift from Rev James Larkin allowed for funds towards construction of a new church building at Fourth and State Streets; this church still stands today and acts as headquarters for local Catholic organizations including Our Lady Helping Hands Church (formerly known as Holy Rosary Parish) that operates out front along East Fourth Street across from current day Elmhurst Road). A post office called "Bartleton" opened in 1893 but closed due to lack of mail volume; it reopened under its present name three years later with mail service provided by Great Western Mail Corporation using facilities located northside off US Highway 64 east of downtown Chicago serving much rural farmland west/northwest of Chicagoland along with parts or allof Cook County including portions now incorporated into neighboring Oak Park & River Forest communities
