Bartlett is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,672 at the 2010 census. Bartlett was first settled in 1837 by John Bartlett and his family from New Hampshire. The town began as a small log cabin settlement on the banks of the White River. In 1851, John Bartlett and his son-in-law Andrew Johnson built a log office and store on the east side of the White River. The store became known as "The mill" because it processed flour for local farmers. In 1861, Andrew Johnson's daughter Lillie married George Wittell of Decatur, Illinois and moved to Bartlett with him. They began operations of the Wittell Brewery which brewed beer until 1924. Lillie Wittell died in 1951 and her husband George Wittell continued operations until his death in 1973; he is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Bartlett. In 1870, Daniel Bedingfield bought 360 acres (150 hectares) along the White River north of bartlett for $10 per acre (1 hectare). He named it "Beningfield Park". It became a major agricultural center with heavy irrigation farming during its early years. A fulling mill operated here from 1865 to 1868; later an elevator was added that allowed water to be brought upriver to irrigate fields further away from townspeople. In 1907, Bedingfield donated land for public school purposes; this led to growth in education within Bartlett when suburban schools were established elsewhere around Chicago during World War II. The current downtown area of Bartlet originates from construction of the original city hall in 1915 following annexation by Bartlet of adjacent townships including Arlington Heights to form what is now Kane County; construction cost $5 million dollars more than originally budgeted and took three years due to high demand for services within Kane County after World War I ended(). One hundred fifty four businesses joined forces with city hall staff to develop plans for expansion which included developing separate shopping districts within City Hall itself as well as new fire departments/services inside and outside City Hall building itself (). After two decades of planning and construction work only 12 businesses still situated inside or bordering on City Hall - most notably KFC - opted instead to build their own facilities out into Arlington Heights or other nearby suburbs whileCity Hall gradually deteriorated into an architectural relic (& lost its funding) . By 1978 only 10%of business functions still took place insideoriginalcityhall& 80%insidenewbuildings created around &aroundit–a situation that has not improved no matter how many times Mayor Dolan promises “To get back downtown” (). In 1830, John Bartlett married Sarah Greenblatt, who was from nearby Decatur. They had two children:John (1831-1905) and Anna (1833-1907). In 1835, Sarah gave birth to their third child, Caroline (Caroline Ann). After Sarah's death in 1840, John took over management of the business which he ran with his sons until his death in 1865. In 1861, he married Emma Houghton; they had one son: George W. (1863-1953). From 1865 until his death in 1953, John Bartlett served as Mayor of Barthlett. In 1850, James Winchester settled near Bartlett and founded Winchester Repeating Arms Company which manufactured firearms theretil 1911. Ammunition manufacturing ceased at Winchester after World War II but went on to be revived by Remington Arms Co., now part of New England Arsenal Inc., based at Milford Haven MA The post office was established at Bartlet on December 15th 1800 by Order of Governor Randolph Ketchum with Samuel Jukes serving as Postmaster General
Bartlett was founded in 1829 by Abram Bartlett and his wife Sarah. The town received its name from General Nathaniel Lyon, who laid out the town in a survey of Illinois in 1828.
