Polk and Franklin D. Roosevelt. In 1881, George Wacker built a sawmill on the confluence of the White River and North Branch Chicago River near what is now Bartlett High School; this mill became one of Illinois' leading commercial interests until its closure in 1965. The town's first store opened at 9th Street and Elm Road on October 20, 1881; it continued to be operated by Joice Hinton until it closed its doors due to financial troubles circa 1920-1921. The first post office moved from its original spot at 7th and Elm to 11th Street about 1911- 1912 after damage caused by a tornado that struck the community on November 12, 1910. In 1915- 1916 two groups of men decided to build new homes around what are now Vestal Catholic Church Squareon lot #7 – one group led by Harry Weisenthal while another group led by John Mazor had their home financed through private donations with construction beginning late summer 1916 but not finished until spring 1917 due to World War I.
