Bartlett is a small town in southeastern Illinois. It is known for its quaint architecture, arts and crafts market, and narrow main street. The community was founded in 1847 by General John M. Bartlett and his family. The population was 713 at the 2010 census. The town was named after General John M. Bartlett, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a Ulysses S. Grant's aide-de-camp during the American Civil War. In 1847, General Bartlett migrated from Massachusetts to what is now Bartlett with his family to start a new life in one of the northernmost settlements on the Great Lakes region. He had heard about possible land grants available for settlement in this area, so he decided to move to Illinois because of it. The first settler in what is now Bartlett was Abram Morse, who arrived there in 1848. Morse built a log cabin on the site that still stands today - one of only two buildings remaining from when the community was founded. Others include an old schoolhouse which has been remodeled several times over its history and sits on top of a hill overlooking downtown Bartlett; and a barn which has been converted into apartments or used as storage space by local businesses since it first became active as a structure in 1901。 The first store opened up shop here circa 1850 when Wm Hodge established himself as a grocery storeeur selling goods including feed, flour, butter and cheese products from his stable across the street from where current day Main Street meets US Highway 54 (now I-55).
