In 1865, following up on his previous donation with an even larger gift (the equivalent of ), John Barrington made another Donation which included orchards and farmland west of downtown for housing development (now known as ). This donation became known as . The first post office opened in Barrington on July 1st, 1860; it was called "New London". On November 15th 1870 David Halsey opened an account with Western Union Telegraph Company at 9 Main Street which served as the first telegraph office west of Chicago. On March 25th 1899 Samuel Morse opened an account with Western Union Telegraph Company at 333 North Dearborn Street which served as the first wire service office north of Chicago. On October 1st 1912 Eastern Telegraph Company opened its doors at 6 Wabash Avenue serving Mobile & Tuskegee until 1915 when it became Alabama Telephone Service Incorporated serving that entire region including parts Of Chicago until 1955 when it merged into AT&T Corporation). Since then there has been only one telephone company operated within this town boundaries; this being Verizon Communications who operates their own exchange located just east side barreling through town limits to reach most places within city boundaries without ever having to go out near downtown where most services are available via phone (including some high end services like Comcast Xfinity TV).
