Barrington is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settler in Barrington was James Paine who migrated from Ulster County, Ireland in 1810 and settled on an acre (1/4 acre) of land that he purchased from the Kiowa tribe for $5. He named his new home "Paine's Prairie". In 1825 Paine married Susannah Coolidge and they started a farmstead which grew to include over 150 acres (60 hectares). They also tilled some miles of prairie and raised corn, hay, cattle and hogs. The first post office in Barrington was established in 1840, but it never achieved much popularity because it was difficult to reach by foot or horseback from most of the village. A wagon road led east to Barrington from Herseyville on the Racine River while another led west to Winona on the Monee River. Because there were not many roads through Kane County then, both routes were used interchangeably for much of their early history. In 1854 Isaac Morse opened a gristmill which became one of Kane County's main sources of income until replaced by a small-scale electric power plant about 10 years later. A large number of citizens served as trustees for various civic organizations such as fire departments and schools until 1916 when even these positions were eliminated due to budget cuts during World War I. From 1914 until his death in 1936 George Crouch ran Kansa Electric Railway which transported goods between Green Bay and Chicago via Union Station on State Street before being supplanted by Amtrak after that railroad's construction began nearby in 1962; however Kansa still remains an important part of Kane County infrastructure today with its own train station located just outside town limits next to Hinsdale High School across the street from Interstate Highway 60). A post office called "Morse" was established at this same address in 1854; however it was discontinued shortly afterwards due to lack of mail traffic caused by commotion following Senator John Morse's victory over Aaron Burr for president that year ( Burr had run as an Anti-Mormon candidate ). The name "Barrington" may have been suggested by farmer Amos Birchall who moved into this area around 1830 after purchasing 1/2 mile square ((east) side)of what is now known as First Lake along with other tracts near present day Park Corner Road where he built a cabin known as cedar Grove - so called becausecedar trees grew plentifully thereabouts – although nothing like this settlement exists existing any longer within Barrington boundaries today! It should be noted that though early residents may have given their community descriptive names such as "Paine's Prairie", "Birchall's Grove", etc., these appellations no longer appear on contemporary maps or local historical records; instead all settlements thereafter typically took their current names directly obtained from official government documents or other reliable sources! . . .
