Barrington, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Barrington name comes from the Greek word "bardaron," meaning "border." The first known settler in what became Barrington was John and Ann (Foley) Smith who arrived in 1814. They were followed by four other families: the Piggottes, Henshawes, Rankins and McGowan families. One of the earliest businesses in Barrington was a mill that operated on the stream called Clear Creek until it was destroyed by a flood in 1872. The first post office in Barrington was established in 1827. The original territorial government for Kane County consisted of three commissioners who administered justice within their boundaries. In 1835, two more commissioners were appointed to provide for more than one township within Kane County and so on through until its abolition on July 1st, 1907 when all territorial governments were replaced by county governments. When Illinois became a state on April 6th of that year, Barrington became part of Cook County under President Abraham Lincoln’s executive order which created county government with six districts each with its own sheriff and member of the board of education as well as several other offices including those responsible for providing water services and street lighting etcetera
Barrington was founded in 1817 by Captain John F. Higginson and his family. The town is named for Captain Higginson’s father, Barrington (or Barm) Hill. The first store in the town was built on what is now Elm Street. The first post office was established in 1827. In 1848, a school was built and the first teacher was hired. In 1865, the first railroad track was laid through the town and it became a part of Chicago.
