Barrington, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 2,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Des Plaines River between Chicago and Midtown Chicago. The Barrington post office was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The first settler in Barrington was John Fenton. The town was platted on July 12, 1853 by Wm. Husted and A.J. Downing with a population of 10 residents. During the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer's forces fought their way through Barrington on their march from Chicago to White Lake on October 6-7, 1864. Apache Chief Black Jack killed four men and three women while robbing a stagecoach stop near present-day Park Ridge; this event is also known as "the Massacre of Barrington." In 1865, during Reconstruction following the war, barbershops were set up throughout the city to provide high-quality haircuts for white Americans who could not afford them (this service continued until about 1910). However, many black people living within miles of Chicago still did not have access to good haircuts or Barber shops because they were considered property of white people only. In 1865–1868 two African Americans worked at an iron foundry owned by Amos Wright near present day Elmwood Avenue and North Cicero Boulevard; these men are said to be among the earliest African Americans employed outside slavery in America. In 1886 John Fenton built his home (now called "Fenton Hall") on what is now Griggs Road just inside town limits; he later donated land adjacent to his home for public school instruction purposes which became Griggs Middle School today.–The first high school instruction started here in 1886 when Mr.. Jno Phelps organized Griggs High School….Two years later Wm Gage opened Griggs Academy which operated intermittently until 1908 when it merged with Griggs High School….. In 1912 Mrs… Anna Mears founded Good Shepherd Home which provided care for elderly citizens…. Another one hundred years goes by without any change taking place here!

Barrington, Illinois is a small town in the west central part of the U.S. state of Illinois. It is located on the border of McLean County and Kane County, and has a population of about 5,000 people as of 2000. The name "Barrington" comes from two early settlers, John Barrington and Nathaniel Barber. Barrington was first settled in 1824 by Levi Cushing and his family. The present day community was named for John Barrington, Jr., who donated land to the town in 1892. The first school in Barrington was built in1831 by Revd Samuel Morse and Mrs Fenton. A log school house still stands today on Main Street near the intersection with East Street. In 1835-36, Mr J B Shipp taught music lessons at home before opening a school on North Second Street which he managed until 1840 when he moved to Canada West to open an academy there. He returned to America in 1849 after being elected mayor of London Ontario, Canada West where he died that year at age 71 years old (note: This account is taken from "A History of Barrington IllINOIS," published by Historical Society of Northern Illinois) In 1850-51 Reverend Moses Silliman organized a Sunday School class with 12 members (2 teachers) for children living within one mile of their home or farmstead according to Nicholas Moulton's map dated 17 November 1850 which shows “a Post Office” at this location - we can only assume this refers to what is now known as Union Station Road). On 2 October 1853 “a House” was erected for $5 per month by Elijah Prentice & wife Ideah Patten – this likely refers to what is now known as High School Avenue although no building remains today indicative thereof). In 1865/66 Holyoke Mason organized 10 children into 3 classes each for $1 per week; these were again taught at home but Attendance gradually dwindled until about 1870 when they rented out space on Third Street] . Reverend James Haughton founded Haughton Academy (later renamed UIUC) in 1886 adjacent to current day UIUC campus – it operated successfully until 1919 when it closed due largely(but not exclusively) to financial reasons]. Finally Reverend Edwin Dillman established The First Methodist Church (now Emmanuel United Methodist Church), also adjacent to UIUC campus [this congregation began services on 8 September 1893], soon afterUIUC opened its doors! It should be noted that many other churches did not establish themselves here immediately; instead they spread out throughout much later years.] Barsony post office opened 1 July 1862 served residents east &west side only.} In 1898–99 George Washingtons made an appearance during his visit here while president pro tempore United States Senate} By 1905 there were 6 stores & 2 hotels} By 1910 there were 9 stores (& 3 hotels)} The population had grown from 350 residents in 1890 to over 4500 by 1920} Many businesses closed during prohibition}; After prohibition ended most businesses reopened except for 1 store which continued operation thru prohibition '29}. Prohibition decreased population size somewhat however job opportunities became available.} In 1930 most residents left town including: Rufus King (& wife Amelia), Willard Brown (& wife Gertrude), Harry Weems (& wife Alice), Althea Goodrich (& husband Drury), James Lowry(&wife Olive); all but Rufus King moved away across river}{ Note: See article "Hugh Sives barry history" online } Most recent resident deaths were recorded between 1990-2000}}
