Barrington is a town located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The Barrington-Watkins School District has a population of 5,571 students. The first settler in what is now Barrington was John Hanks who arrived there on October 17, 1815 from Illinois. A post office called Watkins was established in 1826 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1939. In 1839, the land at present day Barrington was purchased by Captain Oliver Jenkins from Nicholas Bemis and his family for $1,000 cash. Captain Jenkins named the community after General James Wilkinson who had been killed during the Black Hawk War near Cairo, Illinois on August 24 of that year. On November 3rd of that same year, General Wilkinson's body restituted to local residents by order of President James Kapp as a token of appreciation for their support during the war effort. The original plat of what is now known as Barrington Township was filed with the county clerk on December 12th of that year and approved by Colonel Nathaniel Lyon on January 8th of 1840 (the first act passed by the township trustees). On January 11thof 1840 an election were held to select trustees for said township which resulted in George Withers being elected trustee for part time while also serving as city recorder for Kane County; he served until his death on July 9th1854 due to pneumonia contracted while inspecting public works projects within our township which then took over his duties . The date September 14th1854 when Judge JF Sanger rendered his opinion upholding incorporation into Kane County through processional vote is cited as one of earliest events associated with modern day Barrington Township and even though this event occurred some twenty years prior to than when most people would consider it so we can only assume based upon this particular citation that Judge Sanger's opinion did indeed play a significant role in creating or enhancing our current town lifestyle . A post office called Watkins continued to be open until it was discontinued in 1939 however because its location across from where barrysnow lake currently stands made it difficult to receive mail there so instead an additional post office called White Sands was established which opened its doors on February 15th1939 . This new postal facility allowed citizens throughout Kane County not just those living within boundaries bounded by White Sands but also those residing outside those boundaries including people living east or west of I-70 which up until then had been impossible . It should be noted here that White Sands never received mail from abroad unlike today's BARRIER Post Office which does business out Of State . On July 9 th1854 George Withers died due to pneumonia contracted while inspectin g public works projects within our township which then took over his duties leaving behind three seatters Burr Eames John Fenton & Lorenzo Mclntyre each serving for five years before retiring effective November 4 th1958
