The community was founded in 1825 by George Washington Barrington and his wife Ann. The name "Barrington" comes from "Barre Place," which was on the Barrington place near where he grew up. The community is located about 25 miles (40 kilometers) northwest of Chicago. It straddles the border between Cook County and McHenry County. The nearest city is Kenilworth, Illinois, to the east and Rockford, Illinois, to the west. The economy of Barrington depends largely upon agriculture and ranching. There are also a few small businesses in town. Agriculture includes raising crops such as corn, soybeans, cotton, hay or oats; processing agricultural products such as cheese or meat; and manufacturing goods such as cars or appliances. Ranching includes operating cattle drives on public land; leasing land for farming purposes; or owning private ranches that produce beef, pork, dairy products or other goods for sale in town

Barrington is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The village of Barrington is also located in Kane County. The first settlers in what is now Barrington were Native Americans who lived there for much of the eighteenth century. European explorers and traders visited the area during that time and reported back on the local land and people. In 1837, John C. Frémont explored northwest Illinois and discovered what would become Kane County when he passed through this area on his way to reach Chicago. He named the area after General James Halleck, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army in Mexico City during that war. General Halleck had been a friend of Frémont and helped him find resources near modern day Barrington Township. The first post office was established in 1839, but it only served as a stop on stagecoaches heading east to Peoria or west to Streator because no one wanted to come out here then because there were no mail roads yet! The first store was built in 1840 by Elias Fenton with two rooms inside an old barn on Clear Lake Road NE (later Highway 10). In 1842, Samuell Witherspoon opened a flour mill which produced flour for local marketplaces and sold it over the counter from his home off Clear Lake Road NE until he retired in 1924! A new store building was constructed just north of Witherspoon's mill complex between 1918 and 1920 by Charles Sorge after his family bought out Witherspoon's interest! By 1902, all three stores had closed due to changes within Kane County caused by gold Rush Fever; prior thereto most businesses clustered around barber shops/beauty parlors along Clear Lake Rd., although some still operated into the 1920s including (but not limited to) Mrs. Gail Kapp's Bakery & Tea Room which continues operation today as Kapp's German Diner!. Sorge also opened Dearborn Ford dealership across US-41 from original site where current I-88 & I-90 interchange now stands serving Clarence Ford parts since 1924 (& parts depot remains attached adjacent highway side). As late as 1941 most residents still shopped either at home or at Kapp's while many other businesses closed during World War II due primarily to lack of war production support needed outside town; however business revived post-war years despite very hard times thanks largely to tourism economy generated by nearby small towns growth following wars absence! In 1951 Dick Larson became owner/operator of Dearborn Ford dealership; inventory changed hands many times until finally sold678 N Main ST #101 Barrington IL 60510 about 1985 becoming final Dick Larson location until closing about 1990 leaving only garage open remaining current location name & address unchanged
