Barrington, Illinois is a small town in Carpentersville County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Barrington was founded by George Washington Beall and his family on May 9, 1837. The first post office in Barrington opened on October 15, 1838. The name of the town came from General James K. Polk's plantation in Georgia where he had been born on December 12th, 1785. On February 14th, 1840 the first railroad station was opened at Barrington with tracks leading to Peoria (now Peoria Heights). In 1854-1855 George Ladd became president of the Northern Pacific Railroad and began plans for a new line through Carpentersville County which would run parallel to Route 66 south of town and connect with the Northwestern Railway at Dundee just north of present day Hinsdale Junction. Ladd's dream never came to fruition but he did lay down some preliminary tracks near present day Barrington when he died in 1856. On November 3rd 1860 President Abraham Lincoln signed an order authorizing material to be taken down from the high school building that served as his final resting place before being moved into its current location in 1865; this event is also celebrated annually as "Lincoln Day" in Barrington On July 6th 1898 local resident Gervaise Cogswell helped found what is now known as Roscoe Village adjacent to present day downtown Barrington which later became home to many important businesses such as Sears Roebuck & Co., Jussie Smollett LLP and Apple Incorporated among others On October 24th 1941 Saddam Hussein led Iraqi forces against British forces during World War II while residents were inside their homes performing oral history interviews for an upcoming PBS documentary about that time period called "Iraq: A People Under Attack" On January 20th 1945 Japanese American internment began after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor along with other allies including Australia and New Zealand who were not yet members of America Barrington saw its share of both world wars with over 25% of all Axis troop losses occurring during World War II while less than 1% occurred within America due largely to our neutrality policy
