Barrington is an unincorporated community in Kankakee County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east side of the Kankakee River. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Barrington was Nicholas Haines who came from Connecticut in 1836 and founded a cabin on the east side of the Kankakee River. The location provided good grazing for horses and cattle, which supported local farmers for many years. In 1855, Joshua Perkins settled near present-day Barrington and established a mill that processed lumber from trees growing along the river. By 1870, there were several stores and two churches in town. In 1887, John Wirth bought land north of town and built a sawmill that became one of the largest mills in southern Illinois. Wirth operated his mill until 1902 when he sold it to George Aiken who continued to operate it until 1916 when it burned down. Aiken also operated a grocery store and post office in town until 1907 when he sold all his holdings to Elisha Weedon who operated it until 1918 when it passed into private hands again. In 1919, General Electric leased Weedon's mill for six months before shuttering it due to low sales; this led to increased competition for jobs within Barrington that caused prices to increase significantly within a short period of time as well as fewer opportunities for people to get involved with their community). In 1938, entrepreneur Harry Jaffe purchased Weedon's mill which reopened under its new name of Jaffe & Sons Manufacturing Co.; however during World War II Jaffe lost most of its production capacity due to wartime restrictions on manufacturing by military authorities. In 1946-47 Jaffe & Sons Manufacturing resumed production but closed again due to economic difficulties after World War II ended; this led eventually back into private hands once more which resulted in significant reductions in overall employment throughout Barrington over time even though industry has since slowly returned (currently there are only 2 businesses operating within town total) Today much remains unchanged about what made Barrington so successful including its strong community spirit combined with excellent agriculture/farming capabilities making it one of the few remaining communities still using traditional methods such as livestock husbandry while also doing business online or through phone/tablet systems allowing residents access 24 hours/7 days/365 days a year without ever having leave their home - providing another reason why locals continueto call themselves "Barreringtons".

Barrington is a city in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to come to Barrington were French missionaries in 1812. In 1853, Judge John Fenton built a sawmill on the site of present-day First National Bank and also founded what is now Park Ridge Academy. This was followed by several other businesses during the early years of Barrington's growth. The economy grew rapidly due to its location close to two major railroads and its easy access to markets in north central Illinois and beyond. In 1881, George Wickersham erected a large frame church called Christ Episcopal Church on Main Street near where the current Methodist Church stands today. Many people from throughout northeast Illinois came for services there during that time period. A few years later, Barrington had its own school system when barroom teachers formed schools with four classrooms and twenty-four students each at Broad Ripple School Corporation (later known as First State High School). In 1916, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Eberhardt added an addition to their home which served as the first municipally funded high school in town - still existing today as Central High School! In 1922, Mr. Eberhardt donated land along state Route 47 east of town for use as a public park that remains today one of the most popular places in town for activities such as picnics and family outings! When World War II began many residents left for military service; however much like during peacetime many businesses closed or relocated due to wartime restrictions on trade etcetera . Most notably this included Hormel Foods who moved from their original location on Prairie Avenue just outside of town into downtown Barrington after being trucked in from Council Bluffs Iowa . Another restaurant relocation occurred when KFC moved from Elmira, New York into downtown Barrington after being trucked over from Hannibal Missouri . There were also some stores which closed because they could not compete with wartime prices or availability; such as Sperry’s Shoes which vacated theirlocation on Main Street after having been open since 1912 Finally there were those who did not make it through training camp or war but chose instead to stay behind while more ablebodied citizens went off into battle; these individuals became known as "the Gemmites" After liberation local businessesSherwin Williams Paint Shop & GlassesStore #5 on south sideof street between Stroudsburg Road & Western Ave
In 1847, the first post office was organized in Barrington. In 1852, a railroad was built through Barrington and it became a town.
