Barrington, Illinois is a village in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of Barrington was organized on March 6, 1866, by order of the General Assembly. It was named for General Benjamin Harrison Barrett (1798-1869), who served as U.S. Minister to Great Britain and France from 1861 to 1865. The first store in town opened on Main Street in 1867. A post office called Barrington was established in 1870 and remained in use until it closed in 1907. A cotton gin was built near Barrington in 1881 and became known as the "Cotton Gin Works". In 1902 a branch line from Joliet to Quincy ran through Barrington; this line now forms part of north suburban Cook County's Blue Line rapid transit system. In 1916 an oil refinery was built east of town by J P Morgan & Sons Limited; it operated until 1974 when it closed due to pollution problems. In 1969 Barrington Arts District Incorporated was formed with the goal of developing arts businesses within the village boundaries which would promote creativity and cultural diversity within the community beyond just music and theater performance artistry In 1990 First National Bank merged with Community Bankshares Corporation to form First American Bankerride which merged into Nationwide bank in 2006 On July 1st, 2007, First American Bankerride filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after allegations that they had failed to properly staff their branch network resulting in misspent funds totaling $236 million over six years

Barrington, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded by Elias Prentice and his family in 1837 as a trading post on the Chicago River. The first store opened in 1840. In 1851, Barrington became one of the twelve townships in McHenry County. That year also saw the incorporation of Barrington into a village and the opening of its first schoolhouse. In 1871, Barrington annexation to Chicago made it an official municipality within that city limits. On November 3, 1907, voters approved creation of a new township - Seward Township - which included most of what is now southeast suburban Barrington Township and much of what is now northwest suburban Homan Heights Township. On October 25, 1916, Mayor William Juhl announced plans for development of land east of Interstate 94 near Waukegan Lake in Seward Township which would be named after him; this project ultimately failed to come to fruition due to World War I-related financial difficulties. In 1984-1985, residents voted to rename their town "Barrenton." This name change came about because at that time there were no other towns within McHenry County with that name and because many people from neighboring towns in Cook County desired to join those communities' namesakes (eagerly following suit would have been another goal). The name change did not take effect until after voters ratified it through referendum on November 8th 1986
