Barrington is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The township was organized on March 1, 1836 and named for General James Barrington, who had been killed in battle prior to its establishment. The first post office was established in 1838 and continued in operation until 1888. The first school was built on the site of what is now the Barrington Middle School in 1839. In 1840, a log school house also served as a meeting place for early settlers. A frame schoolhouse was erected near present-day State Street and Prospect Avenue in 1847; it remained in use until 1932. In 1853, residents voted to form a new precinct which would include all of Barrington Township including those living on the village (now known as North Bartleton). The first election held under this new arrangement resulted in the election of John Pritchard as supervisor; he remains one of the few people to have served two terms consecutively as supervisor from that time forward. On November 24, 1870, voters within Barrington Township passed an ordinance establishing a board of education with six members elected by vote instead of term configure like other townships in Cook County at that time. This board operated from 1870 through 1972 when it became an independent agency within Park District No 713 (later renamed Arne Duncan Community Schools). On May 15, 1974 the organization changed its name from Board Of Education To Park District No 713 Arne Duncan Community Schools effective date unknown but probably around 1975 or 1976 due to administrative changes made throughout Park Districts following annexation by Arne Duncan's City Of Chicago district resulting from merged city services with Cook County government

One story is that General McClernand spent some time at an inn near Barrington while he waited for his forces to move south; when they did not come back as expected, he ordered his men to burn down all evidence of their stay so as not to leave any clues behind for future invaders or historians. Another version suggests that local farmers turned over many of their crops and equipment to help Confederates rebuild following the war; this led to increased demand for land in nearby communities which helped create new demand for housing and other services from those abandoned townsfolk who had nothing left to lose. There are also reports that people from nearby towns mobility moved into abandoned buildings throughout 1864-1865 as they found homes available without much hassle or fuss from authorities concerned about possible vandalism or looters among those left homeless by Confederate withdrawal from Illinois
Barrington, Illinois was first settled in the early 1800s by Irish immigrants. The town was named for Captain Barrington, a British soldier who fought in the American Revolution. The town began to grow rapidly after it became a stop on the Erie Canal. The town's growth halted when the canal was destroyed in 1839. However, the town continued to grow and prosper during the next few decades thanks to its location on the canal and its contributions to industries such as manufacturing and agriculture. In 1896, Barrington became a city and remains today one of its most populous settlements.
