Barrington, Illinois is a small town located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first indication of human activity in Barrington may have been evidence left by early settlers on the banks of the Fox River. One such settler, John Pemberton, reported seeing "a little Indian village" about four miles from his farmstead on July 7, 1815. A few days later he wrote to his wife that he had found "a very rich country" worth exploring and soon thereafter moved into what would become Barrington. By 1830 there were at least 20 families living in what became known as "the Village." In 1834 local farmers built a gristmill on the river for use by their villagers and began to grow maize and other crops. In 1846 James Reeves patented a tract of land which included present-day Barrington Township and portions of Kane County. The following year President James K. Polk approved an act authorizing the United States Surveyor General to Surveys and Patent Land in addition to lands situated within Cook county under grants issued prior thereto by Abraham Lincoln as part of his Kansas Pacific Railroad project; this act also authorized Ezra Stiles to purchase 8 acres (2 km²) east of present-day Barrington for private purposes with money raised by selling mineral rights underlying that acreage. On March 12, 1850 however, when ample township boundaries were surveyed pursuant to Act No.(30)42 section 3(h), one acre (0·6 km²) west of present-day First Street was added to Township 4 North for just $1 tax assessed during April 1850 according to deeds from Elijah Whitehead & Co., merchants who operated a store fronted along Second Street between State and Harrison Streets at that time until it burned down December 21st 1861). This property located just southwest corner 2nd Avenue/State Road 505 northbound now forms northeast corner corner First Avenue/Upton Road today's barriere southwest corner Main Street bordered parcel including lot number 1 annexed hereinwith since said annexation date circa 1860s when said property was used as horse barns adjacent thereto - thus providing foundation stone for much later addition heretofore unrecorded development period ....... On November 14th 1907 three men entered into an agreement with others claiming title or interest therein concerning railroad right-of-way leading due south from Lockport through Yates County thence passing through Decatur Heights thence rejoining Lockport Turnpike proper thence northerly continuing along current Yates County line parallel thereto past Decatur Heights then turning due east via Lockport Turnpike proper thence joining lockport turnpike proper near its junction with state road 612
