The first Europeans to visit what is now Barrington were French traders and missionaries who traveled through the area in search of new land to explore and evangelize. In 1795, pioneer John Dickey established a trading post here on the Chicago River. In 1833, General James K. Polk appointed Colonel George Armstrong Custer as Military Governor of what was then Michigan Territory. As part of this appointment, Custer decided to move his headquarters from Detroit to Barrington so that he could better be able to protect Indian tribes living in that region. During World War II, many residents served in service or were drafted into the military here including: Edward "Buzz" Aldrin (the first man ever to walk on the moon), Captain Francis Egan (the only person arrested while serving in police force in Cook County), Ronald Reagan and Tom Hanks among others. Today, much of downtown Barrington remains intact with its original architecture and businesses dating back over 120 years; however some recent development has occurred such as a new shopping center being constructed just north of town which replaced an older shopping center that had been abandoned for years by its developers.
The first permanent settler in the area was John Barrington, who arrived in 1795. He founded a small town near the present-day city of Chicago.
