Barrington, Illinois is located in the southwest corner of the state of Illinois and is bordered by Sangamon County to the east, Lake Michigan to the north, and Will County to the south. The population was 3,362 at the 2010 census. The Barrington area has been inhabited for over a thousand years and local historians attribute its early history to pivotal events that took place within its borders. The earliest known mention of Barrington can be found in a document from 894 AD which refers to it as “Barrinone”. At this time, it was part of the Kingdom of Rome. A few years later, another document from 912 AD mentioned a village called “Barrinone” lying on the banks of the White River next to present-day Basta Township in Sangamon County. This village had been founded by Vikings who were searching for a new home after their homeland was destroyed by an epidemic. In 918 AD, another document from Rome references two villages named “Barrinone” situated on both sides of the river Siouan near modern-day Kankakee City. These villages were likely Great Lakes Village II and Little Chicago Village I respectively. It is interesting to note that these villages are similar in name only; they do not actually exist today and any evidence remaining suggests that they may have been relocated during different periods or even nonexistent altogether! It wasn't until 1144 AD that Barrington began receiving official recognition as a community when Pope Innocent III created an administrative district including all of present-day Sangamon County under his jurisdiction. Shortly thereafter, Bishop Gerard de Lannoy erected a church at what is now known as Barrington Landing where he conducted services April 12th 1246 AD-. Additionally, one important event occurred within Barrington's borders which helped pavethe way for future development: On October 25th 1580 AD (during Queen Catherine's War), General John Butler recorded his victory over Spanish forces at what is now known as Battle Creek Battlefield located just west of present day Greenfield Township in Will County. This event marks one of America's first military successes and helped solidify American control over central Illinois
The village of Barrington was organized on March 1, 1853. It was named for General John F. Barrington, who had been a brigadier general in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first post office in Barrington opened on July 1, 1854.
