Scope mounts have been a fixture in the Aurora, Illinois landscape for over 50 years. The company that manufactures and sells scope mounts is one of the oldest in the state. The company was founded by Roy Fenton and his son, Dick Fenton, in 1948. According to Dick Fenton's autobiography, when he started the business it was "just a small workshop with a few tools." In 1951, Roy Fenton purchased an old farmhouse on North Main Street in Aurora and moved his workshop into it. At first, he used the house as a storage facility for his products. In 1956, Roy Fenton opened what is now called the "Fenton Shop" on South First Street in Aurora. This shop was where he sold all of his mounting products including scopes and telescopes. The shop continued to be operational until 1976 when it was replaced by what is now known as the "Aurora Telescope Center". The original Scope Mounting Company had four employees: Roy Fenton himself (manager), Dick Fenton (vice-manager), Bob Hegemann ( salesman ), and John Welsh ( repairman ). By 1957, there were twelve employees at the company. In 1976, Bob Hegemann left to take over operations of ATC from his father-in-law Don Hegemann and added new equipment such as digital camera systems to their lineups. In 1981, Scope Mounting Company merged with two other companies to form what is now known as Hayes Scopes Incorporated . It wasn't until 1992 that they began selling electronic Bushnell scopes which gave them their current name of Hayes Scopes Incorporated .cisely how long Scope Mounts has been around can only be guessed at because no records exist from before 1948! From this point forward they were constantly expanding their product lines beyond riflescope/telescopic mounts!
