Aurora, Illinois is a small town in the southern half of Cook County, Illinois. It is located on the south bank of the river Des Plaines River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Chicago. Aurora was founded in 1814 by Michael O'Hara and his family as a fur-trading post. The first settler in Aurora was Jacob Hnilczek, who arrived in 1815. In 1816, John Pappagee moved to Aurora from Rockford and started trading with the native Potawatomi people. From this trade, Pappagee acquired some land where he erected a cabin and named it after himself, "Papago." When the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in1868, parts of what are now Aurora were part of its line; however, most of the town became part of Chicago when that city was merged into the United States Federal Government on February 14th 1870. The early years of Aurora were very difficult due to World War II shortages of food and materials which affected not only the war effort but also local businesses. However advancements have been made recently including new housing developments being constructed along South State Street adjacent to I-290 while also plans are underway for an apartment complex called "Aurora Commons" located on Northwest Archer Road next to Park Meadows Golf Course
