The first gun target in Aurora was erected on July 16, 1836 by Captain James H. Kapp and his men of the Illinois Republican Volunteer Cavalry. The original Target House is now a museum located at 519 W. Peoria Street in Aurora. On November 3, 1838, the first massacre of unarmed civilians took place in Aurora when three members of the United States Colored Troops opened fire on a group of black Americans who had gathered to demand their right to vote. The shooting left nine dead and twenty-one wounded. Aurora's first rifle range opened its doors on December 2, 1840, with seventy shooters joining forces to take care of business during what became known as "the Shooting Season." That year saw also the first use of a musket in warfare when Company F of the 7th Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry used one against Native Americans near Presentation Bridge. In 1859, John Brown was hanged outside the courthouse in Aurora following his attempted raid on Harpers Ferry Armory that turned into a standoff between federal and state troops that ended with Brown being shot and killed by Ulysses S. Grant
