Aurora, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Kane County. The population was 127,238 at the 2010 census. Aurora is located on the eastern edge of Chicago, bordered by Cook County to the south and west, Lake Michigan to the north and east, and Rockford Township to the northeast. It is one of several metropolitan areas in Greater Chicago; together they comprise the "Chicago-Naperville-Aurora" area. The first European settler in what would become Aurora was Nicholas Fenton in 1813 when he purchased two hundred acres (10 km2) of land fromthe Shawnee tribe for $1 per acre ($6 per km2). This site became known as Fenton's Prairie because it lay between two points on which fur traders could trade with Native Americans. The first post office was established in 1827 as Naperville with Wm. Binns as Postmaster General due to its strategic location next to Ford Road on a bend in River Raisin Creek (). By 1830, Aurora had a population of 100 people and included a store, hotel, millinery shop and about 10 homes.(1) In 1831 Joseph Gummert set up operations as an inn/ tavern called The Hermitage across from what would later become City Hall. Gummert soon began providing goods and services for travelers passing through central Willisville on their way to or from Chicago's North Side or Black Hawk Swamp where he knew Indians livedhunting game.(2) In 1835 Gummert sold his business to John Prentice who continued operating it until 1840 when he sold it again to Nathaniel Ames.(3) From this point forward Auroras growth spurt can be dated back to some 50 years when various new businesses were established along riverbanks near modern day State Street including gristmill (1860), sawmill (1870), livery stable (1900), grocery store (1910), oil refinery (1920), bakery (1940), movie theater complex (1950s-1970s)), hospital (1930s), fire department(1940s-1950s)), shopping mall(1980s)), convention center(1990))and present day downtown core.(4) It should also be noted that there have been many residential developments over time including: Craddock Park neighborhood annexed by Aurora in 1937; Rushmore Gardens neighborhood annexation by Aurora in 1969; Deerfield Village annexation by Aurora in 1998; North Quincy Heights annexation by Aurora in 2009; Eagle Glen subdivision annexed into downtown Aurora by deed dated November 5th 2009.) All told there are well over 1,000 properties located within Downtown Kane County alone that have been developed since its incorporation into city limits! Today Auroras economy continues largely based upon aerospace engineering firms such as Boeing Co., Lockheed Martin Corp., Raytheon Co., ATK Incorporated etc.; information technology companies such as Dell Computer Incorporated etc.; professional sports teams like Green Bay Packers LLC etc.; while small local businesses continue thrive such as Tim Hortons coffee chain etc….. With so much happening within our city Limits we feel confident that We will always remain one of Americas Fastest Growing Cities!
There is a long and varied history of gun swivels. These devices, often called "gun circles," were originally designed to allow the shooter to point their rifle in any direction without having to change it angle every time. The original design was based on the concept that a person's natural shooting orientation is towards their front sight, not their back. Sweeny and his brother Samuel Davenport. The first post office in Aurora opened on December 1, 1837. The first store in the city was built by Wm. Aurora was founded in 1854 by John G. White and his brother, James L. White. The city was named after Aurora, Illinois, a town in LaPorte County, Indiana. The first post office in the city was established in 1855. In 1870, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad built a line through Aurora and connected it with Chicago. In 1873, the railroad replaced the old stagecoach service between Chicago and Aurora with a new line called the Western Union Expressway. By 1915, when Aurora became a city Limits Settlement under Chicago municipal government, its population had grown to over 100,000 people. During World War I, Aurora served as an airfield for American forces engaged in combat against Germany. After the war ended, Aurora experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as an agricultural center for northwestern Illinois. In 1955, Mayor Harry Breslin announced that he would not seek re-election because he felt that he had accomplished more than any other mayor during his eight years on office. He instead opted to become president of University of Notre Dame's football team which at that time still played their home games at Soldier Field Stadium on South Dearborn Street in Chicagoland before moving them to Notre Dame Stadium near DePaul University in 1986 (now known as McCormick Place). In 1966 City Council member Everett Kempton proposed annexation of much of neighboring Research Park Township into the city limits due to high levels of pollution caused by oil refineries located there and within several miles of many homes and businesses along Rush Road/Everett Kempton Boulevard north of Interstate Highway 75 trunkline The proposal passed by 6-3 vote with Councilmember Bill Snyder dissenting because he thought it would impact his constituents' access to quality health care services available within Research Park Township without being annexed into the city limits
