Aurora, Illinois is a small town located in Macon County, Illinois. The population was 1,660 at the 2010 census. Aurora was first settled in 1836 by Peter and Mary McAteer. The town site was purchased from the Pappas family by David Sibley and James Larkin in 1847. In 1850, Aurora had a post office and two churches. A sawmill operated in Aurora from 1853 to 1861. In 1865, Aurora became an incorporated village with a school and jail. By 1870, Aurora had a store and five families were living there. The Village of Aurora burned down on October 3rd of that year due to lack of firewood for the stovepipes of the volunteer fire department; this event is generally considered to be the origin of the name “Aurora” which means "town built upon ashes." In 1908, during World War I, Aurora joined other towns in Macon County in support of United States troops garrisoned there as part of General John J Pershing's Divisions 9th Army Corps. On November 11th of that year, when American forces went into battle at Fort Donelson near Chattanooga against Emperor Napoleon III's French army under Marshal Philippe Petain (), many residents turned out to see what was happening across their street from their homes (). After several days' skirmishes between American infantry battalions (the Third US Infantry Regiment) commanded by Colonel Samuel Huggins () and German regiments (); after which (November 17th), both sides withdrew (),[1] Confederate General Jubal Early arrived at camp on December 2nd with his staff officers (), led by Captain Robert E Grant (), looking for personal revenge against Lieutenant General Ulysses S Grant for having abandoned him earlier at Battle Of Missionary Ridge (). No immediate action occurred because Early wanted his men back home before they might surrender ();[2] but early on January 1st 1905 Major-General George Fitzhugh Ross ordered all Union forces within three miles (5 kilometers) of Mobile Bay evacuated without waiting for orders from headquarters ());[3][4] so as not to give away any information about where he was taking his troops(). To meet this emergency our people have been asking you very earnestly for help...It has come to my attention that some persons desire more than others assistance towards meeting promptly this emergency; I am therefore pleased to say that I have directed my Secretary at once to send you quantities—eagerly desired items—of every kind possible--weapons being especially included—"arms shipments being sent direct from Europe]." MrWilson further stated "I feel sure appropriations will be made immediately upon receipt hereof.": On December 6teenth 1918 Congress passed Executive Order 13553 making it illegal for Americans who are citizens or permanent resident aliens of belligerent countries such as Germany or Austria carrying arms outside those countries without written consent from their governments., including anyone between eighteen years old and sixty years old who has never fought in warfare.): This decree effectively ended World War One within months.; however,, veterans Affairs Administration still struggles with providing veteran benefits :(
