Aurora was chartered on November 1, 1871 by the state of Illinois as a town to be named after James Fenton Aurora, an attorney and legislator who had represented Cook County in the Illinois General Assembly from 1868 to 1870. The name "Aurora" first appears on a map dated 1865 and it may have been derived from Latin for "dawn". The first settler in Aurora Township was Nathan Silliman on March 14, 1872. A streetcar system called The Chicago & Northwestern Railway (later renamed Metra) arrived in Aurora in 1879 and soon became one of the primary transportation arteries within Aurora Township and throughout Cook County. By 1906 there were over 200auto dealerships located within 5 miles (8 km) of downtown Aurora; this number has since grown to more than 500 today! In 1907 Mayor John Dorney convened what would become known as "The Day of Action" which marked one of the most important days in municipal history when municipalities across Illinois staged protests against Governor George Ryan's proposed budget cuts that would impact public services such as education and health care. On July 15th 1907 over 2200 individuals participated in peaceful demonstrations throughout Cook County including 350 people from Aurora attended an anti-poverty rally organized by Dorney outside City Hall where he presented a petition signed by 350 people opposing cuts to government spending that evening! On October 3rd 1909 local physician Dr Charles Wible established himself as one of America's earliest physicians specializing exclusively in family medicine with his offices located just east of downtown near current day State Street and Higgins Road; this move would later lead to him being dubbed "the father of family medicine." In 1911 he partnered with Dr Josephine Pappas who became his wife also practicing family medicine until her death at age 87 years old on February 24th 2006. In 1916 electrical engineer Oscar Wirths founded Western Electric Corporation which now employs close to 3000 people across their nine plants within Kane County - making them one of the largest employers within Kane County today! In 1924 voters approved annexation by then neighboring Elgin Township which at that time comprised all but 7 miles (11 km) southward along I-90 from Chicago intoCook county – making Aurora Heights/Aurora Township onemile wide inside City Limits! In 1951 tornado damage caused $100 million worth total economic damage not counting loss or depreciation suffered by buildings during that era – making it one Of The Most destructive tornadoes That Ever Cause Damage To Property In America
