The first European settlers in what is now Aurora were Frenchmen who landed there in 1772 and began to build a fur trading post. In 1814, the village was founded by John Prentice and James McKay as an unincorporated community on the border of present-day Aurora and Grayslake. A year later, it became one of fifteen townships within Cook County when that county was organized from portions of DuPage and Kane counties on November 3, 1817. By 1829, Aurora had over 2,000 residents. On December 12, 1830 - just two weeks after Abraham Lincoln was elected President - he dedicated a public square in downtown Aurora to commemorate his victory over Andrew Johnson at Peoria Ridge outside of Springfield. In 1861 during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Aurora sided with the Union side against Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee because they thought that doing so would protect their homes and property within Cook County; however their decision ultimately cost them many members of their own community due to military service duty or being drafted into Confederate lines In 1893 – less than one hundred years after its founding – Steel Manufacturing Company moved its corporate headquarters from Green Bay Wisconsin to Aurora IL On October 15th 1908 according to certified records filed with the Kane County recorder’s office land sales for parcels totaling 203 acres were made between John Prentice & Sons Incorporated (the founder/owner of what is now known as Aurora) for $4 per acre The land sale included 5 lots located east/west along Third Street between State Road 506 & Seventh Avenue which contain today’s buildings including: Genesee Hall (now known as “The Tavern”), The Masonic Temple (now known as “The Starlite Ballroom”), Post Office Building #1 (now home to “Pioneer Village Plaza IGA store”), Park Avenue Apartments (now home to “Aurora Towne Center Hotel & Casino Resort"), most importantly First National Bank building which still stands today on East Side Drive next door to First National Bank . There are also other buildings such as: Second National Bank building built about 1904 but no longer standing; three stores built about 1916 but no longer standing including Oneida Savings bank building; two schools built about 1918 but no longer standing including Slough Elementary School which still stands today adjacent to Slough Middle school; finally church built about 1922 which also still stands today adjacent to both schools
