On July 15th 1881 when land was donated by Nathan Smith to be established as a town here on what would later become known as Second Street (now First Avenue), residents voted 3-to-1 in favor of naming their new community "Aurora." This initial effort failed due to lack of consensus among those who participated about what exactly they wanted their town called - some thought it should be named after either nightingale goddess Auriemma or revolutionary war hero Jonathan Dayton (founder of Illinois). However, with more than two decades since incorporation Development Commissioner John Waddell announced plans for further annexation including Third Street between State/Second Streets - bringing aurorans closer together physically - everyone agreed that "Aurora" would work just fine! So much so that on November 15th 1934 Aurburn City Council renamed itself "Aurora" once again following ratification by all members present...almost 70 years later! After almost seventy years living under one name there finally seemed like finally an appropriate one for this growing metropolis located just east of downtown Chicago! Once again on January 25th 2007 Mayor Richard Molyneux announced plans to rename Burlington Township (northwest side) home to his namesakeCity following unanimous approval from both Township Commissioners & City Councilmembers!!! After many rounds of voting & consideration over 6 months it came down to Auroras vs Burlington Township regarding which moniker would represent better Aurora's continued growth & success story: Auroras or Bernie's? That's right folks...the Cyclone Zone will now have her own name!!
