With this acquisition came opportunities for both single-family dwellings (with gardens) as well as duplexes/ triplexes; today’s elementary school offers classrooms for grades K-8 while also housing an adult daycare center run by church groups; plenty of open areas have been converted into garages or parking lots for cars parked overnight during heavy snowstorms . The history of Arlington Heights can be traced back to its earliest days when Samuel Winchester settled down on land he purchased from Anthony Quinn in 1817 near what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Western Avenue in northwest suburban Cook County In 1850, James Aitken bought 6 acres (2 km²) of this land from Winchester for $1 million dollars In 1861-1862 there were several skirmishes between Ulysses S Grant's Union Army and Confederate forces near present day Garfield Park during the American Civil War For many years until well into the 20th century much of what is now Arlington Heights consisted only of agricultural land . However , starting around 1915 some developers began putting together parcels that would become downtown . This downtown area today extends from Elmhurst Ave east to Western Ave
