When America's first telescope was built in 1795, it was atop a small hill in Arlington Heights, Illinois. The observatory was the work of one man- George Washington. Over time, other astronomers joined Washington in building telescopes and analyzing the heavens. By 1868, there were more than 50 telescopes dotting the sky in America and Europe. The growth of astronomy during the 19th century was due to three factors: American scientific innovation; European technological advances; and American money spent on research and development. Many telescopes were built with funds from private individuals or foundations who saw astronomy as a important tool for nationalism and scientific advancement. During World War II, amateur astronomers used their scopes to help make observations of targets across the globe. Afterward, many amateur astronomers turned their attention to Telescope Technology Center (TTC) projects that provide single-field images over several kilometers at high resolution today. America's first telescope remains an iconic landmark in Arlington Heights – now home to more than 50 optical telescopes operated by dozens of organizations around the world!

In 1854, Dr. John Herschel set up his Observatory at 601 Nangaji Road in Arlington Heights and began making use of the Hooker telescope to study stars and planets. In 1865, Dr. Samuel Pierpont built a new observatory on Addison Avenue in Arlington Heights which became known as the Samuel Pierpont Observatory after him. In 1872, Mr. Wesleyan Copley erected a large telescope on Elm Grove Road called the “Atlas” which was used for astro-photography and other astronomical research methods until it was destroyed by fire in 1916. The last scopes were made by Professor Averill Harriman at his observatory on Addison Avenue in Arlington Heights between 1919 and 1923 when he retired from astronomy due to age limitations; however, some ofHarriman’s equipment still survives today including his famous reflector Telescope (1893).

The city's namesake comes from Arlington House on North Avenue which was built in 1892 by George Washington Carver as a dependency of his American Academy for Learning and Teaching. Arlington Heights was platted in 1872 as part of the Town of Winnetka and incorporated as a city on February 14, 1893. At that time it consisted only of blocks south of West Side Highway and east of Cicero Street; it now includes alluvial plains extending to Lake Michigan to its north and west. The first mayor was John Dickson and first City Councilmember were Wm. Hesseltine (1893-1894), James Aiken (1894-1901), Abram Warner (1902-1903), Louis Pappas (1903-1905) and Alfred Sloan (1906-1909). As an agricultural center with small towns around it during the 19th century, Arlington Heights experienced little development until after World War II when new suburbs began to form around it due to strong demand for land within walking distance of schools, shopping centers, workplaces and other services

In the 18th century, when people started using rifles to shoot at targets, sighting in became even more important. With improved technology and devices like watchmakers' instruments called masons' tools, it was easier to sight in on targets with precision. By the early 19th century, spotters had developed sophisticated methods of findingbinoculars could also be used to improve accuracy and see objects up close. One of the earliest and most famous spotting scopes was designed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte. He designed a device called a "Cup" style telescope in 1795. This type of telescope allowed users to look through a large eyepiece down onto an object that was several feet away from the display lens on the telescope itself! This type of spotting scope is still used today by some amateur astronomers as it is very easy to use and provide good image quality. Other notable spotting scopes include those built by John Herschel (1793-1878), Samuel Morse (1837-1928), James Clerk Maxwell (1872-1955), Edwin Hubble (1904-1996) and Konrad Zuse (1920-2011).

The village of Arlington Heights was platted in 1881 and became the first community in Chicago to have a library. The first post office was established in 1886. The city of Arlington Heights is home to many notable landmarks, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), which is one of the most prominent universities in the United States; Joy Battery Park; and Kendall Square Shopping Center. The city has also been home to several professional sports teams, including the Chicago Bears (NFL) and Blackhawks ( NHL).
In 1871, Arlington Heights was founded as a small town by Irish immigrants. It grew rapidly in the 20th century, becoming one of the most popular suburbs in Illinois. The area now known as Arlington Heights was originally part of Bloomington, which was then a smaller town. In 1951, Bloomington split into two towns: Arlington Heights and Bloomington-Normal. Arlington Heights continued to grow and became its own municipality in 1986.
