Arlington Heights was founded in 1867 by George Washington Dixon and his wife, Julia. Dixon had moved from New York City to the town of Arlington Heights, Illinois in 1856 after purchasing a tract of land here. The original village consisted of just a few houses and a small barn. In 1870, the Dixons added two morehouses to their parcel and named it Arlington Heights Village. The village grew rapidly during the late 1800s as families from all over started moving into the area. By 1900, Arlington Heights had developed into one of the most prosperous towns in Illinois. During World War I, Arlington Heights played an important role as a military base for the United States Army. The town became known for its production of munitions and other war-related products. In the 1920s, Arlington Heights experienced another growth spurt as new residents began coming to live here based on its growing economic opportunities. By 1930, many of the original wooden homes were replaced with brick or metal structures. Many of these new residents continued to live in Arlington Heights until they died or retired – making it one of the most vibrant communities in Illinois during that period. Today, Arlington Heights is still home to some of its earliest settlers and continues to be an important community hub for local government and business operations alike
The town of Arlington Heights was founded in 1859 by Horace Greeley. It became a city in 1874. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad built a line through the town in 1887, and it became an important transportation center. In 1915, the United States entered World War I, and Arlington Heights became one of the first municipalities to mobilized for war. The city was destroyed by fire in 1945, but it regained its status as a city after being rebuilt.
