In 1892, Anton LaVigne founded what would become known as LaVigne Chevrolet Companyshipping company within what would become Arlington Heights; he started it out of his garage on North Milwaukee Avenue with two cars worth $2 each. This early success led LaVigne to open other manufacturing plants throughout Chicagoland before selling them all off in 1933 for $500 million dollars ($ when measured against GNP). He remains one of America’s most successful businessmen ever due largely to this gift from his son Harold Averill La Vigne Jr., now Chairman emeritus at Ford Motor Company effective January 1st 2019. The area around what is now Arlington Heights was primarily agricultural until the early 20th century when heavy industry began to take hold. One of the major companies that built in Arlington Heights during this time was Phelps Dodge, which founded a refinery there in 1922.
