The Village of Arlington Heights was organized on November 3, 1871 by a group of businessmen and selectmen from the town of Arlington. In 1903, it became a city.

A few notable exceptions include Wrigley Field (which remains an unincorporated agricultural area) and Ford Lincoln Park (the site of many early auto manufacturing jobs). One major attraction in and around Arlington Heights are the Blue Jays baseball team's spring training facilities located across the street from Midway Airport just north of North Avenue on Clinton Road near Interstate 80. During its time as a village, Arlington Heights grew to be one of the most important commercial areas in Chicagoland with its own bank and post office. In 1915, Arlington Heights became an incorporated town when it joined Cook County; it remained an unincorporated community until 1954 when it merged into neighboring Streamwood Township along with other villages within Cook County for purposes of local government consolidation under the new form of township government.[1] The current name for Arlington Heights comes from two sources: One derives from George Washington Custis—the son-in-law of Virginia Carr Custis—who bought 640 acres (248 ha) adjacent topresent-day Archer Road from Nicholas Murray Butler in 1854;[2] while another source suggests that Washington's friend Colonel John Armstrong founded "Arlington" on these lands after their visit toStreamwood during President James K Polk's May 1865 trip to Illinois.[3][4] Whatever its origin may be, "Arlington" quickly came to represent not only great wealth but also genteel society and prestigious suburbs known for their fine architecture such as North Shore Drive,[5][6][7][8] Mount Greenwood Village,[9][10] Lake Forest Country Club,[11] Embassy Row[12], Lincoln Park[13]) as well as many high-end shopping centers including Irvington Plaza mall,[14][15],[16]), Wilmette Town Center mall,[17],[18], Schaumburg Center mall[19], Vernon Hills Mall[20], Winnetka Plaza mall[21]) which continue today even outside Loop neighborhoods like Woodbine or Oak Lawn; all these malls were built over large swaths once covered by forests now swallowed up by residential development or completely lost to suburbia".[22]:p 208–209
