Arlington Heights, Ill. is a small town in Cook County, Illinois that was founded in 1881 by George Washington Irving and his family. The town was originally known as Bloomingdale and it changed its name to Arlington Heights after becoming a part of the United States. The population of Arlington Heights was 9,362 at the 2010 census. In 2007, Arlington Heights was named one of "The 50 Best Place to Live in America" by Forbes magazine. The history of Arlington Heights began with George Washington Irving who arrived there in 1881 during the American Civil War era. He and his family were instrumental in helping to create what is now Arlington Heights through donations and land purchases. The original village of Bloomingdale wasestablished on the west side of Chicago Avenue near Illinois Route 362 which attracted many wealthy Americans to live there until they moved away during World War II when war-time restrictions made it difficult for them to maintain their homes. After the war, Bloomingdale slowly declined until it finally closed its doors in 1957 due to economic reasons alone. In 1907, Arlington Heights became a part of the city of Chicago through an annexation vote conducted by then Mayor John Daley with support from then-Governor James Norris . By 1958, however, Mayor Richard Meehan requested that all annexations be halted due to budget constraints so that more focus could be placed on downtown Chicago growth which had exploded since unification happened two years earlier. The vote remained unchanged but led to resentment within the community over what some saw as Daley’s favoritism towards downtown instead of suburban interests like Arlington Heights which he claimed needed help maintaining its infrastructure such as roads and schools while other towns were neglected or even abandoned altogether. However, through hard work and determination, some residents managed to achieve success during this time period. One such resident was John Fenton who became president and CEO of Sears Roebuck & Co.. In 1922, he announced plans to open a second Sears location in Chicago – located on South Washburn Avenue – which would become one of the largest U.S.-based retailers ever at that time.
