Arlington Heights was founded in 1881 by George Washington and his family. The village flourished until the great Chicago fire of 1871 destroyed most of the buildings. The area regained its prosperity and growth after the opening of the Chicago-Joliet Railway in 1879. The village became Home Rule Township in 1907, and then an independent city in 1912.
