Arlington Heights is bordered by Mayfield on the south, Berwyn on the east, Roscoe Park on the north and west, and Wheaton to its northwest. The name "Arlington Heights" comes from two places: one was a small settlement near what is now Lake Michigan Avenue and Prairie View Drive in Elmhurst Township; and another was an estate located just outside of Chicago that became Arlington National Cemetery. The first incarnation of Arlington Heights consisted only of a few homes and some outbuildings. In 1911, when it became part of Cook County as a result of incorporation by vote through referendum,[1] there were over 100 families living in Arlington Heights proper including many who had settled there during the Panic of 1893.[2] Many wealthy citizens donated land for national cemetery purposes which – like other federal cemeteries – earned extra revenue from fees paid to maintain it. The first interments took place at Arlington National Cemetery in 1924 after it opened as a national cemetery - becoming one of America's largest - but also because Cook County couldn't afford to keep all itsnational cemeteries open at all times as they did with Soldier's or Navyyards (the county had built them mainlyto serve military needs).[3][4] In 1957-58 Douglas Aircraft Corporation established an aircraft factory downtown which soon created enormous job growth throughout downtown Chicago.[5][6][7] This led to increased development around First Street/Lake Shore Drive between Michigan Avenue and Ashland Avenue which further escalated gentrification within a short radius around First Street/Lake Shore Drive whereupon new high-end housing developments began popping up such as Lighthouse Pointe[8][9], Oneida Island[10], John Hancock Center[11], etc.. Today's Arlington Heights has a rich history that goes back much further than just its present day incarnation. The first residents of Arlington Heights lived close together on small farms near what is now downtown ArlINGTON HEIGHTS。 They built homes out of logs since there were no roads or rails yet available for travelers across this region at that time………. There are numerous stories associated with early settlement in ArlINGTON HEIGHTS including one where an American colonel who had returned home after being wounded during the Revolutionary War decided to live among his troops once again…………………. One account claims he purchased 400 acres (16 km2) adjoining Bloomington Township for $1 per acre ($26/km²). Soon thereafter another group arrived looking for land for themselves…………….. After surveying their selections they bought 5 more parcels totaling 10 acres (4 ha) each………………………. By 1830 all but two remaining landowners had left Arlington Heights due to increasing prices for farmland or other reasons…………….. Ultimately only 2 people remained – Captain John Pugh and his son James Pugh…………….. Captain John Pugh soon sold off some additional land including 3 pieces of property totaling 20 acres (8 ha)………. James Pugh managed to purchase an additional 20 acres (8 ha) through negotiations with local officials before selling everything else back to Captain John PUGH… This acquisition allowed him sole dominion over all but 2Oacres (.8 hectare), which remain today within Park Forest subdivision………………………….. It should be noted that while prior inhabitants may have likely built homes using logs or rough-hewn timbers they did not date this particular architecture construction until later………………………………….. Despite these challenges early residents adapted well and gradually formed social clubs which would help promote community spirit and cooperation………………………………….. Among these early organizations were: The Ancient Order Of United Daughters Of Providence Of All Saints Of Jesus Christ And Mary; First Congregational Church; Society For Promoting Christian Knowledge; Masonic Lodge #527; Episcopal Church……………………………………….
